The American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers
is undertaking this global registry of lost and stolen instruments and bows
of the violin family in the public interest and is therefore provided free of charge as a public service.

The American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers will in no way be responsible for the accuracy of these listings. This responsibility lies totally with the person or persons submitting them and its is in their interest to review them from time to time. It is also the responsibility of the listing bodies to inform us when goods are recovered so we can remove the listing. This prevents having the goods seized when they are brought into violin shops at some future date.

Below is a list of stolen or missing instruments and bows as they are reported to us. We provide this public service without cost and intend to leave the listings here until we are notified of their recovery or a reasonable length of time has passed. Listings are in alphabetic order by maker, when known or by nationality under general description.

These are believed to have been stolen through mail fraud by an individual by the name of Laszlo Burai.  We were contacted in January by the individual who said he was an amateur player and collector and was looking to purchase a couple violins for investment purposes.  These were shipped out to him for trial at the end of the month with a return date a week later.  They were shipped via UPS to an address in Merrillville, IN.  We followed up with the individual repeatedly and were told a number of excuses such as he needed more time, he was recently in the hospital with pneumonia, or were simply ignored.  The credit card number he gave to us was not valid.

We have contacted the Amherst PD.  If you have seen or heard about any of these instruments please contact Hillary or Matt at our shop at (800) 766-0936.

Taken in Los Angeles on December 22, 2006 a violin labeled Carlo Tononi of Bologna, Italy 17—“ is actually the work of the father, Joannes Tononi. The back is formed by two pieces of maple cut on the quarter and is marked by a mild, medium-broad horizontal figure.  The sides are of plain maple with occasional faint figure.  The table is cut from two pieces of spruce with very narrow grain at the center and widening toward the flanks.  The scroll is carved of plain maple.  The varnish has a golden brown color and shows considerable wear in the back.  The usual brand stamp of Tononi is missing because both lower sides from the button outward are grafted with new wood which replaced the original brand stamp of the maker.  Therefore, the Tononi stamp does not appear on this instrument.  Velvet cover in the case is tan/light brown in color and inscribed with the words "Lady Margaret — 1694."Measurements: Length of body: 14  inches (35.6 cm),Upper bouts: 6 ½  inches (16.4 cm), Middle: 4 ½  inches (11.4 cm), Lower bouts: 8 inches (20.2 cm) note that the violin which bears the label of “Carlo Tononi of Bologna, Italy 17—“ is actually the work of the father, Joannes Tononi.  $10,000 reward for the recovery of the instrument. Viola, made by Andrew Weinstein of Boston in 1981, stolen along with my car from a restaurant parking lot on the evening of February 5, 2005 in Tampa, Florida.  The car was recovered the next day but my viola was gone. There is a number on the label ( but I can't remember exactly other than it's less than 20). Instrument is 16 5/8", bridge has initials of "GWR" and varnish is a reddish-brown.  Bow is of the German school, silver mounted and is octagonal pernambuco.  Case has an olive green canvas protector with music pocket and comes from Bein and Fushi.  Please contact Virginia Huchton at vla_virginia@yahoo.com or (727) 441-1258.
