Austria finds stolen Stradivarius

Christian Altenburger with the returned Stradivarius violin

Recovered Strad in hands of elated owner

A rare Stradivarius violin worth an estimated 2.5m euros ($3.4m) has been returned to its owner in Vienna after it was stolen last month. Austrian police discovered the valuable instrument in a raid on a flat in the capital, arresting six asylum seekers from Georgia as suspects. Musician Christian Altenburger said he was "overjoyed" at the return of the violin, which was found unscathed.

Another violin and three bows were also stolen from Mr Altenburger's safe. Austrian Interior Minister Guenther Platter described the investigation as "exemplary." "I never dared to hope that my instrument would be found so quickly," Mr Altenburger said.

Distinguished violin maker The investigation led police to a Georgian gang wanted for 21 other burglaries, Major Manfred Briegl told a press conference.

"The fact that alcohol and clothes were also stolen from the flat led us to immediately rule out a contracted theft and reminded us of the operating methods of a Georgian gang," the leader of the search said. Police arrested one man and two other suspects in a western district of Vienna on Tuesday. Another three men were arrested at a nearby flat. There police also recovered a Vuillaume violin and three bows stolen from Mr Altenburger's flat, the AFP news agency reported.

Antonio Stradivari is considered to be the most distinguished craftsman of the instrument. He made over 1,000 violins, violas and violoncellos, and was commissioned by King James II of England and King Charles III of Spain. It is believed that only about 650 of these instruments survive.

Dear Mr. Montgomery!
With great relief and joy, I would like to inform you that my entire stolen collection was miraculously returned to me. We think that the great pressure put upon the person responsible for this act through; Kevin Leary, the private detective, the Dedham police, the violin industry and all the dealers who heard about it specially through your efforts, paid off . the people( or person) came to their senses and realized how difficult and dangerous it could be to continue holding on to the items or try to sell them.
I would like to thank you from my heart for your help and guidance.
Best regards     Farhoud Moshfegh.

(LOS ANGELES, CA – May 18, 2004, 1 PM) -- The Los Angeles Police Department’s Art Theft Detail has
announced the Stradivarius cello, known as the “General Kyd,” has been recovered.  The cello, owned by
the Los Angeles Philharmonic, has been missing since April 25, 2004.

On Saturday, May 15, the LAPD recovered the cello after the finder’s attorney called the tip hotline to say she had discovered it near a dumpster in the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles. On Monday, May 17, the instrument was positively identified as the Philharmonic’s missing Stradivarius cello.

A Los Angeles-based expert restorer of fine stringed instruments, Robert Cauer, has examined the cello
and determined that it requires some restoration.  It is expected that the sound of the instrument will be fully restored.

“The Los Angeles Philharmonic is extremely grateful to the LAPD for their tireless efforts.   We are deeply gratified that the instrument is back in our hands.  While it needs some repair, we are confident that Robert Cauer, who has worked with the cello for over 20 years, will fully restore it.  We anticipate the day in the near future when the cello returns to its home on the stage of Walt Disney Concert Hall,” commented Philharmonic President Deborah Borda.

Philharmonic Principal Cellist Peter Stumpf is relieved to have the instrument in safe hands, adding, “First and foremost, I’d like to express my deepest gratitude to the entire Los Angeles Philharmonic Board, staff, and orchestra, for their support in this situation and to the LAPD for working so hard on this case. It’s been a difficult few weeks and I appreciate everyone’s concern.”

Nicknamed the “General Kyd” for the man who brought it to England at the end of the 18th century, the instrument was made in Cremona, Italy, in 1684. The British premiere of Dvořák’s famed cello concerto was performed on this instrument in 1896 by cellist Leo Stern. Purchased by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association in the early 1970s, the cello has
been played by a member of the Philharmonic since then.  Stumpf began playing the instrument in October 2002 when he joined the orchestra.

Dear Mr. Vann:

I am pleased to inform you that Bonnie Hampton's Ashley cello and Salchow bow, which you kindly listed this spring on your web site, have been recovered undamaged in New York.

If you're able to make a notation to that effect, I think it would provide some encouragement to people whose property has been stolen.  If you generally delete your listings, that's fine, too.

Profound thanks for your help in this matter.  We found that many people had become aware of the theft, through electronic and other communications, and one of them was therefore able to spot the cello and bow when they surfaced.

Best regards,

Molly Skardon
